Remote Desktop Connection, For Getting access to Other Computer From U'r Computer
If your home computer has Windows XP Pro (or Media Center Edition) installed, you can access it from any other computer running Windows from anywhere in the world using Remote Desktop Connection. Some versions of Windows, like 98, Me, 2000 and require software available from Microsoft.com:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx
There are a few steps required to configure your home network to accept connections from outside computers and additional security measures required to keep your PC safe from people who might be scanning for computers with RDC installed.

There are a few steps required to configure your home network to accept connections from outside computers and additional security measures required to keep your PC safe from people who might be scanning for computers with RDC installed.
Set A Complex Password
Remote Desktop relies on Windows XP passwords for login. If you don't currently have a password configured for your account, or if your password is something simple, change it. At minimum, your password should be 10-12 characters long, with a combination of numbers, letters and special characters. This password is no longer just designed to keep out your roommate or family members, it's going to keep the entire Internet from accessing your computer.
Change the password for your Windows user account from the Users section of the Control Panel.
Enable Remote Desktop Connections
The first thing to do is enable Remote Desktop on the machine you want to connect to. Open System Properties either by right clicking the My Computer icon in the Start menu and choosing properties or Windows Key + Pause/Break on your keyboard. Click the Remote tab in System Properties and check the box next to Allow users to connect remotely to this computer.
You can verify RDC is working by connecting from any other computer on your local network.
Configure Your Router
If your router still has the factory default password, change it. While it's unlikely anyone will find your router on the Internet, not changing the password is asking to have it hacked. A strong password of 10-16 characters is advised.
The next step in the procedure is to configure your router to allow inbound connections to Remote Desktop on your local computer. This requires mapping a port on your router to a port on your local computer. The process for forwarding a port varies depending on who made your router, but in general there are a similar series of steps. Linksys refers to the port forwarding page as Applications & Gaming, most other routers refer to port forwarding options as Virtual Servers. To forward a router port your need to configure the following details:
Application or Description field: RDC
Port Range Start: 3389
Port Range End: 3389
Protocol Type: Both (or TCP if a both option isn't available)
IP Address of your PC: Type ipconfig at the command line if you don't know this
Enable: check a box to enable the port forward
Port Range Start: 3389
Port Range End: 3389
Protocol Type: Both (or TCP if a both option isn't available)
IP Address of your PC: Type ipconfig at the command line if you don't know this
Enable: check a box to enable the port forward
For security reasons, if you don't travel often, disable this router port when you return from your trip.
Change the Remote Desktop Listening Port
For added security of your RDC setup, you can change the default port Remote Desktop Connection listens on from the host computer. This prevents detection by anyone doing a routine scan for RDC. This is also convenient if you want to connect to more than one RDC computer remotely. For instance, I have 3 computers that never leave home. By default, RDC watches the same port on all computers, which means I'll either get a conflict of some kind or I won't be able to connect at all. An alternative is to redirect RDC traffic to each computer.
You can read more about the process in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 306759
To change the listening port, you need to modify the Windows Registry. Locate the appropriate Registry key using Regedit.exe:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber
From the Edit menu, click Modify and then click Decimal. Choose a new port number. In general, choosing a number between 49152 and 65535 will avoid conflict with any other apps on your system, but you could theoretically use any port on the system. Once you set the port number you also need to configure your router to pass the specified port to your computer.
To access your computer remotely, instead of typing just the IP address, you need to type the IP address followed by the port number like this: 192.168.1.1:50001
Test Your Connection
The real trick is you need to leave home to test your configuration, so you don't really know it works until you are in the field. You need to know the IP address provided by your ISP to make the connection (Find your IP address). Visit a local coffee shop with WiFi to test the connection. Launch the Remote Desktop Connection client from Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications.
Enter your home IP address and cross your fingers. If all went well, you'll see the Windows Login screen.

Speedup your RAM with these tricks
Low RAM capacity slows down your computer speed significantly. You cannot work smoothly in a computer when it is getting slow and slow. Even though the computer speed depends on several hardware parts and their capacity/speed, you can speed up a computer by installing additional RAM card. Sometimes you may not increase RAM due to not available ram slots in the mother board. Changing motherboard can be cost effective task to fix this problem. Don't worry...... there is a solutions for this.
Windows XP comes with a special feature to increase your RAM by using your Hard Disk. It is called Virtual Memory. Also known as Paging File. You can allocate some space from your hard disk to use as a virtual memory. By default Windows XP comes with a virtual memory size of 1.5 times of RAM. (If your RAM capacity is 256MB, Virtual memory will be 384MB). This is space uses when the RAM going low in capacity.
You can change paging file or the virtual memory size and the partition of the hard disk where paging file exists at anytime as you wish. But there is few guidelines to optimize virtual memory.
- Avoid allocating virtual memory on the same partition where the system installed - Your system partition is heavily accessing drive by the operating system and because of that it will slow down the data read and write speed. And also cause to limit free space of the system partition which usually slows down the PC speed.
- Do not put a paging file on a fault-tolerant drive such as a mirrored volume or a RAID-5 volume. Paging files do not require fault-tolerance, and some fault-tolerant computers experience slow data writes because they write data to multiple locations.
- Do not put multiple paging files on the different partitions of the same hard disk. Use only one paging file on one hard disk. If your computer consists two or more hard disks, you can create paging files in each hard disk.
How to change paging file/virtual memory
- Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then click Change under Virtual memory.
- Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
- Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) orMaximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.
Changing windows paging file size needs restart of your computer to make changes.
Or try for the following process:
ReadyBoost is a memory extension for Windows Vista. It works very much like the swap file on the hard drive, but it is not used as an active extension to the main memory. Instead, Windows uses it to pre-cache application data for popular programs.
ReadyBoost is meant to support the new SuperFetch feature by adding more memory to the system. Microsoft's intended storage device is a USB 2.0 Flash memory stick, mainly because these products are incredibly affordable and reasonably fast. Knowing that USB 2.0 memory sticks deliver between 5 MB/s and 30 MB/s you might wonder how this makes sense.
Most USB 2.0 Flash memory devices on the market offer a capacity of 512 MB to 4 GB. There are smaller and even larger products available; the mainstream is at around 1 GB. These storage devices are very popular, as they are durable and small, and they can be used as a key fob. Many users use USB Flash memory sticks today as they used to jockey floppy disks.
The strength of Flash memory isn't exception transfer performance, but access times that can almost be called nonexistent. Even if you got a memory stick that doesn't provide more than 15 MB/s, it will still benefit from its DRAM-like access times. Compared to a hard drive, which might not be able to provide requested data at its maximum transfer performance of 60-80 MB/s due to higher priority system requests, the USB 2.0 Flash device should be available for serving the SuperFetch purpose. Even the separation of swapped data on the hard drive, and superfetched application data on a USB Flash device provides a small advantage.
When you check out our test results later on you will realize that the memory expansion by means of an USB 2.0 Flash memory device does indeed have a positive impact on application launch time. If you already have a high-speed USB 2.0 Flash memory device at 512 MB or higher capacity you should consider plugging it into an available USB 2.0 port. Windows will prompt you as you plug it in, but instead of opening an Explorer window to access the device's content you can now assign it for use with ReadyBoost. You can use the whole capacity or reserve a smaller capacity for ReadyBoost. It's important to know that Windows doesn't store critical data onto the USB device, which means that you can remove it at any time without facing any kind of data loss. The only impact might be longer application launch times.
Test WorkFlow:
First of all we installed Windows Vista Enterprise from scratch and added all required drivers. As we finished the installation we set a system restore point, because we recreated this clean system state (with no impact of SuperFetch learning from our testing activity) for every complete set of benchmarks. We used Microsoft Outlook with a 1.5 GB PST file, the Internet Explorer 7 with a locally stored website and the OpenOffice Writer with a huge press release document as our applications to test SuperFetch and ReadyBoost. Here is our testing sequence:
- Boot Windows Vista
- Wait 2 minutes
First Run
- Start Internet Explorer
- Wait 5 min (15 minutes if ReadyBoost USB 2.0 Flash device is attached for the first time)
- Start Microsoft Outlook

After changing the Multiple sign-in option to “on” after clicking on the “change” link, Google informs that this is an advanced feature and that it will only work for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sites, Google Reader, Google Voice, App Engine and Google Code. When multiple sign-in is enabled, a drop-down is displayed next to your email address at the top of the page, so you can quickly switch to a new account.
“If you use multiple sign-in, the first account you sign in to will be your default account. If you visit other Google products that don’t support multiple accounts after you’ve signed in, you will automatically sign in to your default account for that product. If you sign out of any Google product while signed in to any account, you will be signed out of all your Google Accounts at once.”

5 Forward Thinking Presidents
Dealing with the technology of the day is part of the President’s job description, but some have looked to the future more resolutely than others. Today being President’s Day, here are five Commanders in Chief who gave their geek constituents stuff to actually geek out about.
Thomas Jefferson: Jefferson’s belief in the power of technology extended far beyond Presidential policy. He invented an improved plow himself and was the architect of a navy with leaner gunships. He ran the nation’s first patent office as Secretary of State and his home at Monticello was packed with experimental furniture and unique gizmos. There were few aspects of his life that weren’t informed by his idealistic belief in the power of ideas.
Dwight Eisenhower: In addition to making nuclear dominance a national priority, Eisenhower oversaw the creation of the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, a vast network of state-to-state roadways that have shaped the country economically and culturally. The freeways helped accomodate an increasingly automobile-dependent society but were also posited as an essential infrastructure for matters of national defense.
John F. Kennedy: “We choose to go to the Moon,” he told the nation, and that’s just what we did. With a helpful push from Cold War paranoia, Kennedy kickstarted our fledgling space program and in 1962 announced the ambitious goal of putting a man on the moon before the decade’s end. After seven years of frenzied innovation and tireless engineering, the dream became a reality.
Jimmy Carter: After an oil crisis in 1977, Carter formed the Department of Energy to oversee energy-related policy and research as well as the management of the nation’s nuclear weapons. The department now funds more scientific research than any other federal agency. Prior to his presidency, Carter served as a submariner in the U.S. Navy, working with nuclear-powered subs before he was honorably discharged. Nuclear-powered subs! C’mon that’s awesome.
Ronald Reagan: Though Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, a system of space-based weapons designed to protect the United States from nuclear attack, was criticized as being unrealistic—an early proposal called for nuke-powered x-ray laser satellites—it did set the stage for researching and funding defense technologies that are essential today. And how can you not secretly geek out on a Presidential project known to most of the country as “Star Wars.”

Samsung Corby II S3850: 3.14″
Seeing the immense success of Samsung Corby handset, the Korean manufacturer has now come up with Corby II S3850. The features seem to be pretty similar to its predecessor. However, there is slight orientation in its design, making the phone look more glamorous. Also, the support for WiFi and a bigger screen makes it a lot better than Corby.
The new Corby 2 features a 3.14 inch QVGA screen, which is a lot as compared to Corby`s 2.8 inch. The phone comes with Samsung`s Social Media Hub software, which allows you to manage various social networking sites, messengers from a single place.
The phone has a 2MP camera just like its predecessor. There is however a better connectivity option this time with features like Bluetooth 3.0, GPRS, USB 2.0 and WiFi being present.
Corby II has a sound music player capable of playing all major file formats. It comes with Samsung`s special TouchWiz Interface, letting you access the apps more smoothly.
The phone has a Java support as well and therefore it allows you to download various Java apps and use it on phone.
Samsung Corby II Price and Availability in India
Samsung has not yet officially announced the price of the handset. However, expect it to be somewhere around Rs. 5,000. It will initially be launched in Germany at the end of March and then will soon be available to India and other parts of the world. The device is available in attractive colours of yellow, pink and white.
My Verdict
Overall, Samsung Corby II seems to be a nice feature-packed handset. It is good for younger generations, who basically like dealing with social networking services and like to showoff a lot. What are your views about the phone? Do let us know your views.
Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi Tablet Available at $380
Amazon has starting taking pre-order for Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi only tablet. This new tablet can be pre-order right now for $379.99. However, they don’t mention the releasing date of this tablet.
Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi only tablet features 7-inch display with lower screen resolution (800 x 480 pixels) than Motorola XOOM, and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but in come in more portable design than both of them. The Dell Streak 7 is powered by NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, and it runs Android 2.2 Froyo OS.
The Good news is the Dell Streak 7 Tablet Wi-Fi only tablet is significantly cheaper that other Wi-Fi tablet. But this tablet is not the cheapest if compare with with the Tegra 2-based tablet with Android 2.2, such as eLocity A7 Touchscreen 7-Inch Android 2.2 Tablet. You can buy the eLocity A7 Touchscreen 7-Inch Android 2.2 Tablet under $300.
While Dell Streak 3G capable version will cost you for $449, if you are not willing to pay that much, you can choose the $199.99 one with sign up for two year mobile broad band service contract.
Nokia X2-01 Musiz Phone Full specifications
Nokia seems to be appealing towards its budget audience around the world. Especially in India, we saw the earlier budget QWERTY phone, the X2-01. Now, the Finland-based mobile giant has announced through their blog, the X1-00 music phone which also comes in the generation of the X-series handsets.
Colourful music anyone?
For one, the X1-00 definitely looks quite attractive with the vibrant colours and a cool, snazzy design. The phone runs on a Nokia Series 30 OS and boasts of the following specifications:
- 1.8-inch display
- Memory expandable up to 16 GB
- FM Radio
- 3.5 mm audio jack
There’s no word about the connectivity options, but it’s quite possible for the X1-00 to be loaded with Bluetooth and GPRS – these being the basic features most phones have nowadays. If you noticed, the specs don’t mention of a camera and that’s because the phone doesn’t have one! The X1-00 also has an LED torch as a feature.
Anyways, the phone is globally priced less than €35 (approx Rs. 2,125) and is expected to hit stores next month. Stay tuned for a review of the X1-00.
